THC CANNABIS VS. DELTA 9 HEMP

Understanding the Difference

Apr 9th 2025

In the evolving world of cannabis products, it’s easy to get confused. Two terms that often come up are “THC Cannabis” and “Delta 9 Hemp.” While both contain THC, they have key differences that are important to understand.

THC Cannabis

THC Cannabis refers to the traditional marijuana plant. This plant is known for its high levels of Delta 9 THC, the primary psychoactive compound that produces the “high” associated with cannabis use. In states where cannabis is legal, you’ll find a variety of products derived from THC Cannabis, including flower, concentrates, edibles, and more. These products are typically regulated and sold in licensed dispensaries.

Delta 9 Hemp

Delta 9 Hemp, on the other hand, is a bit more nuanced. Hemp is defined as cannabis with 0.3% or less Delta 9 THC on a dry weight basis. However, recent legal interpretations have allowed for the sale of hemp-derived products that contain Delta 9 THC, as long as they meet that 0.3% threshold. This means that a large gummy or edible could contain a significant amount of Delta 9 THC, as long as the total dry weight percentage remains under 0.3%. These products are often sold online or in stores that may not require a dispensary license.

Key Differences

Legal Status: THC Cannabis is legal in states that have legalized recreational or medical marijuana. Delta 9 Hemp is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, as long as it contains 0.3% or less Delta 9 THC on a dry weight basis. However, some states have their own restrictions on hemp-derived products.

THC Content: THC Cannabis typically contains much higher levels of Delta 9 THC compared to Delta 9 Hemp products. This leads to a more intense psychoactive experience.

Regulation: THC Cannabis products are generally subject to stricter regulations and testing requirements in states where it is legal. Delta 9 Hemp products may have less oversight, though regulations are evolving.

Availability: THC Cannabis products are only available in licensed dispensaries in legal states. Delta 9 Hemp products can often be purchased online or in various retail stores.
